State College, Pa-  Monday evening, members from community organizations like Standing at the Gates for Justice and Mom’s Demand Action spoke for a crowd of over 50 ranging from elementary students to senior members of the community.

Candles were lit as a reminder of the warmth and kindness attendees said locals should show each other… which they say also symbolized a flame of hope towards peace will never be extinguished.

While many looked towards the future with optimism, some say it will be a long time till the community heals.

Handheld candles lit up the faces of dozens of students, faculty and community members at the Allen Street Gates on Monday.

Standing At The Gates For Justice, a local movement, focused its weekly 4 p.m. gathering on those killed in last Thursday’s shooting. Ben Wideman, campus pastor for 3rd Way Collective, is a leader of the group.

“Today’s vigil was specifically focused on the loss of lives that happened here in our community on Thursday night,” Wideman said. “Honoring the victims, remembering their lives [and] dealing with the fact that gun violence is a part of all of us.”

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Community members host a vigil at the Allen Street Gates in downtown State College every Monday. Sometimes, just a few people attend but today drew a much bigger crowd than usual — as the organizers chose to honor the victims of last week’s deadly shooting.

“In wake of the violence that has taken four lives and left one hospitalized, we thought it was fitting to have it this week, honor those victims and remember their lives,” said Ben Wideman, the pastor and event organizer for 3rd Way Collective.

A public vigil for those killed during the Jan. 24 shooting will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28 at the Allen Street Gates.

Standing At The Gates For Justice, a local group, will host the vigil.

On its Facebook page, the group said, “Our weekly vigil will focus on the recent State College shooting. Join us as we remember, mourn and imagine a better world moving forward.”

Last spring, the Penn State LGBTQA Student Resource Center started a new program — a space where members of the LGBTQ community can shop for clothes and accessories in a safe, welcoming environment.

Penn State’s Clothing Transit was made possible through the financial support of the Philip N. Knutson Endowment and a gift in the memory of Penn State student Eli Roe, who also used his birth name, Miriam. He died by suicide in 2016.

This week, they were joined by students, faculty and community members to stand in support of sexual assault survivors, including Christine Blasey Ford, who recently accused supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

At first glance, it might be hard to tell that Nadia Bolz-Weber is an ordained Lutheran minister.

Bolz-Weber will be coming to speak at Penn State at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the Freeman Auditorium in the HUB-Robeson Center.

The campus ministries involved in planning the event wanted “to raise visibility of different religious voices on campus,” according to Alicia Anderson, a campus minister and adviser for the Lutheran Student Community.

The organization, Receiving with Thanksgiving, began in the fall of 2015 with one hope in mind — creating a space where one can identify as both Christian and LGBTQ.

STATE COLLEGE – Western forces struck Syria with more than 100 missiles in the first ‘coordinated western strikes’ against the Damascus government, targeting what they said were chemical weapons sites– in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack.

Smoke was still rising from the damaged buildings hours after the strikes took place. Other buildings were destroyed.
